JAKARTA - Jafar Archery, the Palme d'Or winner was sentenced to one year in prison in Iran. This news was shared by his lawyer through the AFP Agency.

Mostafa Nili as Apani's lawyer explained that the verdict included two years of travel abroad and the prohibition for Panaini to join a group or political organization. Even so, they will appeal the decision.

The lawsuit against the director was caused by alleged propaganda activity, but his lawyer did not explain in detail.

When the verdict was issued, Jafar Archery was in the United States to promote the film It Was Just an Accident. He attended the Gotham Awards in New York City on Monday, December 1 local time.

Through the film, Archery won Best Director and Best Orisinal Script. The film also received a nomination for Film Panjang Internasional.

In addition, Archery will also attend the Marrakech Film Festival on Thursday and is scheduled to discuss the event. Jafar Archery is currently in France.

The film It Was Just an Accident was selected as a French state representative for the International Feature category at the Academy Awards. The film tells the story of five ex-convicts planning to take revenge on the men who tortured them in prison.

Jafar Archery often faces the Iranian government for alleged propaganda. In 2010, he was banned from making films and leaving Iran after making films containing criticism of the country.
