YOGYAKARTA - Salat rawatib is a sunnah prayer consisting of sunnah muakkad and ghoiru muakkad prayers. Salat rawatib is known as a sunnah prayer that accompanies the fardhu prayer, both before and after it. Salat which was established before the fardhu prayer is called qabliyah prayer, while the one who performed the fardhu prayer is called ba'diyah prayer.

In the Book of Nihayatuz Zain, according to Syekh Nawawi al-Bantani, the number of rakaats of all rawatib prayers is 22 rakaats.

According to Syekh Zainuddin Al-Malibary (987 H) in the book Fathul Muin, the rawatib prayer in a day amounts to 20 rakaats:

"It is sunnah to pray 4 rakats of sunnah before the ashar prayer, 4 rakats before the dzuhur and after it, 2 rakats after maghrib and it is sunnah to connect 2 rakats of ba'diyah maghrib with the fardhu prayer, and the priority of connecting 2 rakats of ba'diyah maghrib is not lost because of doing ma'tsur zikr after the fardhu prayer, then after isya 2 light rakaats, as well as 2 rakaats before the isya prayer if you are not busy answering the azan. If there is free time between the azan and iqamat to do 2 rakaats before isya, then it can be done. If not, then it is concluded (after the isya prayer), and two rakaats after dawn." The Difference Between Salat Sunnah Muakkad and Ghairu Muakkad

The difference between sunnah muakkad and ghairu muakkad prayers can be reviewed from the law of implementation and the number of rakaats.

Law of Implementation

Salat sunnah muakkad is one of the sunnah prayers that are highly recommended to be performed, while salat sunnah ghairu muakkad is a sunnah prayer whose implementation is not so strengthened.

Number of Rakaat

Based on the implementing law, the sunnah muakkad prayer consists of 10 rakats, with the following details:

This opinion is based on a hadith from Ibnu Umar RA.

‏مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ مُسْلِمٍ يُصَلِّي لِلَّهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ ثِنْتَىْ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً تَطَوُّعًا غَيْرَ فَرِيضَةٍ إِلاَّ بَنَى اللَّهُ لَهُ بَيْتًا فِي الْجَنَّةِ أَوْ إِلاَّ بُنِيَ لَهُ بَيْتٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ

"If a servant of Allah SWT prays 12 rakaats (sunnah) every day, before and after the obligatory prayer, Allah SWT will build him a house in heaven or a house will be built for him in heaven." (HR Muslim)

In another hadith it is mentioned, the person who performs the zuhur rawatib prayer will be freed from the fire of hell.

Whoever observes four rak'ahs before Zuhr and four after it, Allah will forbid him from the Fire.

"Whoever performs four rakats before Zuhr and four rakats after it, Allah will forbid the fire of Hell for him." (HR At Tirmidzi and Ahmad)
