JAKARTA - Singapore ranks first in the world for the percentage of adults who feel safe walking alone at night. According to the 2025 Global Safety Report Gallup, 98% of Singaporeans feel safe doing this.
This marks the 12th time Singapore has been at the top of its safety perception rating according to Gallup, an analytics firm and consultant from America, since the survey began in 2006.
Reporting from the VNExpress page, this report is based on more than 145,000 interviews in 144 countries and territories last year.
Globally when asked, "Do you feel safe walking alone at night in the city or the area you live in?", 73% of adults feel safe.
This figure is the highest since Gallup began tracking safety perceptions nearly two decades ago. In Singapore, 98% became the most prominent. Over the past five years, Singapore's population's level of security has never fallen below 94%.
Both men and women reported almost the same sense of security, namely 98% of men and 97% of women felt safe walking alone at night.
Gallup assessed that Singapore's success in creating a high sense of security was due to its low crime rate, effective law enforcement, and strong public order.
However, Gallup also emphasized that Singapore's success as a small, high-income island country may be difficult to emulate in other countries.
Other countries participating in Singapore in this ranking are Tajikistan (95%), China (99%), Oman (99%), and Saudi Arabia (93%).
On the other hand, South Africa recorded its lowest figure, with only 33% of adults feeling safe walking alone at night. When it was first measured in 2006, this figure was 41%, but in recent years it has averaged only about 31%.
