The musical performance of Sabang Merauke was held again this year at the Senayan Arena Indonesia, Jakarta on August 23 and 24, 2025 with the theme "Hikayat Nusantara" which describes the wealth of folklore from various regions in Indonesia.
Sabang Merauke Performance Director Rusmedie Agus said the stage would feature the adventure story of Punakawan figures and a group of gen Z teenagers facing a danger that would stir up the culture and traditions of the archipelago.
"On his way, this figure met with figures we know from the stories of the people of the archipelago. From Sumatra he will meet the figure of Malik Kundang, on the island of Java he will meet the figure of Si Tumang, Di Yogyakarta will meet the figure of Mahadewi, and in Bali he will meet with the figure of a Charcoal Candidate," Agus said at a press conference in Central Jakarta on Monday.
This stage will involve more than 1,500 art actors, including 351 dancers. Also enlivening the stage of national musicians Yura Yunita, Padi Reborn, and a number of talented young singers accompanied by Jakarta Concert Orchestra, Batavia Madrigal Singers, Resonanz Children Choir, and traditional music artists.
A total of 31 songs and dozens of dances from all over Indonesia will be performed including "Bungong Jeumpa" from Aceh, "Manuk Dadali" from West Java, "Come on Mama" from Maluku, "Sajojo" from Papua, and many more.
In terms of musicals, Indonesia's famous composer Elwin Hendrijanto will act as a music director. Elwin explained that he arranged traditional songs combined with orchestral music accompaniment which was not only accompaniment, but also part of the storyline.
"Traditional music which becomes an identity is combined with the dynamics of an orchestra which is finally combined with words of lyrics that are sung emotionally rather than the singers. That's what in the end the overall music is not only to screen but to drive the story," he said.
The orchestral music will be performed by Jakarta Concert Orchestra led by conductor Avip Priatna with the support of a choir from Batavia Madrigal Singers and The Resonanz Children Chois.
