JAKARTA - Actor Ioan Gruffudd remembers the Fantastic Four franchise as one of the first superhero films. Currently, Marvel is presenting Fantastic Four: First Steps as the launch of a new franchise.
Ioan Gruffudd played Reed Richards in the first two Fantastic Four films in 2005 and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer in 2007. Both films received mixed reviews, which impacted the franchise's development.
"The idea was we were going to make three (films), and I think the second film was as successful as the first and really enjoyed by fans," Ioan Gruffudd told Vulture.
"I loved working with Doug Jones (as the Silver Surfer) on that film, who is a fine artist and very skilled at movement. If you want to see someone bring the character to life physically, he's unbeatable," he continued.
"The plan was to make three films, but that decision was beyond my control," he added.
Long before the interview, Gruffudd had revealed how difficult it was to star in the franchise, as his career hadn't flourished despite being a Marvel production.
"As an actor, you grieve for every part you play, and this is no different. This was the biggest milestone in my career, and because of these two films, the character becomes a part of you," the actor said.
"I think the grieving process is when you enjoy the character and you can't play them anymore," he said.
In his version of Fantastic Four, Ioan Gruffudd stars alongside Jessica Alba as Sue Storm, Chris Evans as Johnny Storm, and Michael Chiklis as Ben Grimm.
