JAKARTA - After a tragic incident that happened to climbers from Brazil, Juliana Marins, the Provincial Government of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) expressed its commitment to thoroughly evaluate the Mount Rinjani system and hiking trails.

This step is taken as a form of anticipation so that similar incidents do not happen again and to improve safety standards for climbers, both local and foreign tourists.

The Deputy Governor of NTB, Indah Dhamayanti, emphasized the importance of improving climbing regulations, especially in terms of supervision, safety procedures, and evacuation readiness. He conveyed this in a press conference after directly reviewing the condition of the victim's body at Bhayangkara Hospital, Mataram, Thursday, as quoted by ANTARA.

"We have coordinated with various parties and also conveyed our condolences and commitment to the families of the victims. Regulation improvements will be carried out, including climbing procedures for foreign and domestic tourists, so that Mount Rinjani remains a world-class destination but with better safety guarantees," he said.

This anticipatory step, he continued, includes cross-sectoral collaboration, including the manager of Mount Rinjani National Park, nature lovers organization, private parties, and security forces. The goal is to strengthen risk mitigation and emergency response systems when an accident occurs on the hiking trail.

Responding to criticism regarding the slow pace of the evacuation process, Indah explained that the geographical terrain and extreme weather are the main inhibiting factors.

"It's not that the team is not ready. Since receiving the report, the joint SAR team immediately moved. However, the weather quickly changed and the steep terrain made it difficult to access the victim's location," he explained.

The NTB Provincial Government is said to have tried to deploy air evacuation support through a helicopter belonging to PT Amman Mineral. However, this effort was hampered by the weather that did not allow flights.

"The evacuation is still carried out optimally by Brimob and Basarnas. The Brimob commander also directly led the team in the field. The victim's family can understand how difficult conditions are at the location," added Indah.

The incident of Juliana's fall into a 600-meter-deep ravine in the Mount Rinjani area occurred on Saturday, June 21. An intensive three-day search by the joint team finally managed to find the body on Tuesday, June 24. The evacuation was carried out without the help of helicopters and bodies being carried on a stretcher to the Gunung Rinjani National Park Hall, near the entrance to the climb.
