This recommendation is based on the sabda Rasulullah SAW which states,

When shaking hands, Abu Ayyub Al-Anshari noticed the long nails of Abu Washil. He also reprimanded while conveying one of the Sabda Rasulullah SAW:

However, there are exceptions under certain conditions, for example if the ends of the nails are too short so they are difficult to cut. In a situation like this, the nails are considered not to prevent the water from reaching the body that is cleaned.
