JAKARTA - The Shrek film franchise will return with a new film. Actor Eddie Murphy revealed that he will reprise his role as Donkey.

"We started (Shrek 5) a few months ago. I did this. I shot the first part, and we'll be working on it this year, we'll finish it," Eddie Murphy said, as quoted by Collider.

Murphy explained that the Donkey film will be the latest spin-off of the Shrek franchise. Furthermore, they are also preparing for Shrek 5.

"Shrek will be released, and Donkey will have his own movie. We're also making a Donkey movie, so Shrek will be the new Donkey," Murphy said.

"I started shooting Shrek, I think it will be released in 2025. And we're just working on the next Donkey," Murphy added.

In 2023, DreamWorks Animation was reportedly considering a new Shrek film featuring the original cast, including Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and others.

Several Shrek films were released between 2001 and 2010. Therefore, the latest Shrek film will arrive 14 years after the last one. This franchise led to Shrek becoming the first film to win an Oscar in the animated film category.

The first two films also competed for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The final film in the Shrek franchise is Puss in the Boots: The Last Wish, which will be released in 2022.
