Losmen Melati Combines Local And Dutch Culture

JAKARTA - The movie Losmen Melati has a background in the 1900s to 90s with the concept of a blend of local and western culture, specifically the Netherlands. The film, made by Mike Wiluan and Billy Christian, tells the story of a mysterious remote inn managed by Madam Melati (Alexandra Gottardo).

Travelers who spend the night at Losmen Melati will be faced with nightmares, and they will never be seen again after closing the door to the inn of a million mysteries.

"Losmen Melati has the concept of blending folklore with horror stories popular in Indonesia, combined with western culture in international standard visuals that can be sold abroad," said director Mike Wiluan, at a press conference in Jakarta, Tuesday, March 14.

Mike said the team had conducted in-depth research on cultures from Indonesia and the Netherlands. It is hoped that this combination will also hook the tastes of international horror film connoisseurs, by bringing a touch of Indonesian culture.

It is known that both the setting, costumes, props, and the cast of Losmen Melati present a strong Javanese culture, with the main character of Dutch descent, Madam Melati. Losmen Melati also seeks to create a new horror icon through Madam Melati, a woman who is graceful, mysterious, and femme fatale, but able to invite the audience's sympathy.

The femme fatale describes a woman who has intelligence and sexual attraction with a manipulative attitude in order to get what she wants.

"We want to create something different, the protagonist Madam Melati who is an anti-hero," Billy said as quoted by ANTARA.

Billy added that so far Indonesia has had one legendary horror character, Suzana. Madam Melati is expected to become a new character with her own characteristics.

"We also packed this entire film, starting from the setting to the main character, in a classic and vintage touch," said Billy.

Apart from Alexandra Gottardo, Losmen Melati also stars Kiki Narendra, Samuel Panjaitan, Fandy Christian, Dwi Sasono, and several other names. This collaborative movie between Infinite Studios and Catchplay will soon be shown in the cinema in Indonesia starting March 16, 2023.
