In Order For Children To Read, This Is Something That Parents Can Do

JAKARTA - Reading a lot of books both to increase knowledge, but growing an interest in reading in children and adults is not easy and requires good discipline.

To grow an interest in reading, one needs to realize the benefits of reading. Then, to start something new or not used to need good discipline, said psychologist from the University of Indonesia Vera Itabiliana Hadiwidjojo.

"Regarding the benefits of reading, then schedule it with discipline that in a day there must be time to read the book," said Vera, as reported by ANTARA, Friday, September 23.

Meanwhile, to foster an interest in reading to children, Vera said parents need to set an example by showing the habit of reading in front of their children. This will be effective because the child will always imitate the people around him.

"Then, hold time to read books together regularly. Read books for children who are still young regularly," added Vera.

He added that it is also important for parents to use the content of the book as a topic of discussion so that children are interested in reading the book. He also suggested to regularly take children to the nearest department or library.

Meanwhile, according to psychologist from the Indonesian Clinical Psychologist Anna Surti Ariani, parents need to create a fun environment or situation when their child reads. When a child is young, so that it is fun, it is read out first with his parents.

Read books that are age-appropriate so that the sentence is easy to understand. When he can read it himself, a reading angle can be made at home. It doesn't have to be one room, one corner is enough, says the psychologist who is familiarly called Nina.

"Children can also be given praise. For example, 'wah, cool, how many books have you read?' or 'how many pages have you received?' it could be a reward for them to be more happy to read," he continued.

Another thing that must be considered to foster children's interest in reading, continued Nina, parents must ensure that the books given are in accordance with the age of the child.

"Don't let the child still have it, then we are ambitious to give him a 5-6 year old book. Likewise, children who are already in elementary school, don't force him to read a child's book, later they will get bored. Elementary school children will read it smoothly and he needs a longer story," he said.

As for growing an interest in reading for adults, Nina said it would be easier if done together. Therefore, it is important to have friends who also have a hobby of reading.

"For example, there are friends who have an interest in reading and then they become one group and share reading with each other. They can invite friends who don't like to read too much, just come and listen to other readings," said Nina.

"It will foster more interest in reading than trying to do it yourself. So, the reinforcements from other people will be good," he concluded.
