JAKARTA - Actresses Im Soo-hyang and Sung Hoon will again compete as main players in the Korean drama series, the new romantic comedy Woori the Virgin, about 11 years after they played a couple in the series New Tales of Gisaeng (2011).

"Since we worked together early in our careers, we have formed a sense of friendship. I am very happy and relieved that (Sung) is taking on the lead role," Im said during an online press conference, quoted by The Korea Times as reported by Antara on Thursday. Woori the Virgin is scheduled to premiere on May 9. The series is a Korean adaptation of the popular American series Jane the Virgin which ran for five seasons starting in 2014.

Directed and written by Jung Jung-hwa, the series Woori the Virgin tells the story of a 29-year-old woman named Oh Woo-ri who works as an assistant writer for the famous "makjang" series.

Oh is still a virgin but one day a doctor accidentally inseminates by implanting the sperm of a successful CEO named Raphael (Sung Hoon). After that, Oh faced the role of a single mother.

Jung said the original series had much more extreme elements. He admitted that he tried to adapt the series into a Korean style so that local viewers could easily enjoy the story.

"There are a lot of elements that don't (culturally) suit the Korean audience. But since we still have to portray interesting parts of the original work, the important part is to incorporate our cultural sentiments, not just translating the script," he said.

Instead of focusing on romance dramas, Jung said Woori the Virgin also highlights the process the female lead goes through to form a family.

While Im said he was interested in the unique concept of the Woori the Virgin series. He is also curious about the development of the character he plays while reading the script, especially how Oh's character goes through times of crisis.

"I read the script thinking, 'Can we make a story like this in Korea?' he said.

He added that the Korean drama series Woori the Virgin combines fictional stories with realistic elements. Im also admitted that playing in this drama was a new experience that brought fresh air for him. The series is scheduled to premiere on Monday (9/5) and Tuesday (10/5) on the SBS television channel.
