The First Muslim Superhero Will Appear In 'Ms. Marvel'

JAKARTA - Marvel Studios introduced the first Muslim superhero through a trailer for Ms. Marvel which will premiere on June 8. In the trailer released Tuesday, March 15, the story begins with Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) in the office of a high school guidance counselor. Kamala is known as a person who likes to daydream. At one time, she gained strange cosmic powers, such as the ability to launch energy blasts and create glowing stepping stones to walk through the air.

Later in the trailer, she also gets a red-and-blue costume like in the comics and does some giant glowing fists.

Quoted from Variety, Ms. Marvel stars Iman Vellani, Saagar Shaikh as her older brother Aamir, Mohan Kapur (Disney Plus Hotstar series "Crime Next Door") and Zenobia Shroff ("The Big Sick") as her parents, Muneeba and Yusuf, Matt Lintz ("The Walking Dead") as Bruno's best friend Aramis Knight ("Into the Badlands") as Red Dagger.

Marvel Studios initially announced Ms. Marvel was due to premiere in late 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the series back until the summer of 2022.

It also puts the show closer to "The Marvels", the sequel to the "Captain Marvel" film that will feature Vellani alongside Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) from "WandaVision". The film is scheduled to premiere in February 2023.

Marvel Comics introduced Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teenager from New Jersey who idolized Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel in 2013.

In 2014, Kamala had superhuman abilities and her own solo series with the nickname Ms. Marvel and made her the first Muslim superhero to become a title in Marvel comics.
