The Directors Guild Of Korea Announces 10 South Korean Films That Help Gender Equality

JAKARTA - The Directors Guild of Korea or DGK announced 10 South Korean films that were included in the Bechdel Choice 10. The films on this list are considered to help promote gender equality in the film industry.

The selection of this film starts from the release of the film in 2019 until the middle of this year. The announcement will be broadcast on Wednesday, August 12.

The films selected include Kim Ji-young: Born 1982 (2019), Maggie (2019), Another Child (2019), House of Hummingbird (2019), Our Body (2019), The House of Us (2019) , Moonlit Winter (2019), Lucky Chan-sil (2019), Baseball Girl (2019) and A French Woman (2020).

In addition to films, DGK also selects individuals who play a major role in gender equality, namely House of Hummingbird director, Kim Bo-Ra, scriptwriter Another Child, Lee Boram and Kim Yoon-seok, actor Moonlit Winter - Kim Hee-ae, and CEO of ATO. House of Us production house, Kim Ji-hye.

Bechdel Choice comes from Bechdel Test which was dubbed after the American cartoonist Alison Bechdel created it in 1985 and became the basis of how women appear in films.

To pass the Bechdel Test, 2 female leads must appear in a film and they discuss an issue that is not tied to the male character.

A number of films entered into the Bechdel Choice were judged in accordance with the Bechdel Test. Call it, Kim Ji-young: Born 1982. This film presents how a husband and wife can help each other without feeling dominating each other. Every year, Bechdel Test is conducted to review various releases throughout the past 1 year.

DGK will start Bechdel Day 2020 from September 1 to September 7 in celebrating gender equality and supporting film activists in South Korea to raise issues between men and women.
