JAKARTA - The Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) has again revealed the findings of natural medicine products (OBA) mixed with drug chemicals (BKO). In intensive supervision from November to December 2025, BPOM found 41 problematic products. These findings were obtained from a thorough examination, including direct tracing to production facilities and distribution channels.

During these two months, BPOM through the National, Regional, and Local POM Offices throughout Indonesia conducted sampling and testing of 2,923 products consisting of OBA, quasi-drugs, and health supplements.

In November 2025, of the 1,087 samples examined, 32 OBA products were found to contain BKO. Meanwhile, in December 2025, 9 products were found to contain BKO from 1,836 samples tested.

The results of the search for registration data and inspection of production and distribution facilities show that all of these products are illegal. Most do not have a distribution permit (TIE), and some even list a fake distribution permit number.

In addition to violating the rules, the circulation of this type of product is at risk of endangering public health, harming the economy, and weakening consumer protection.

The findings at the end of this year add to the long list of BPOM's supervision results throughout 2025. From January to December, BPOM has tested 11,654 OBA products and health supplements that are widely circulated. The result, 206 products were found to contain BKO.

Throughout 2025, the most common misuse of BKO was found in products with claims of male stamina enhancer, containing sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil HCl, yohimbine HCl, paracetamol, and caffeine. Products with claims to relieve pain are also often mixed with paracetamol, dexamethasone, sodium diclofenac, and ibuprofen.

In addition, sibutramine and bisakodil were also found in slimming products, siproheptadin and dexamethasone in body fattening products, and glibenclamide in products with claims to overcome diabetic symptoms.

The Head of BPOM, Taruna Ikrar, reiterated that the addition of BKO in OBA and health supplements is strictly prohibited because it risks causing serious impacts.

Effects that can arise include heart and blood vessel disorders, vision disorders, mental problems, decreased immunity, liver and kidney damage, long-term organ damage, and even death if used without medical supervision.

He also explained in detail the risks of some commonly found substances. Sildenafil can cause vision problems, headaches, digestive disorders, nasal congestion, heart attacks, and even death.

Dexamethasone and paracetamol are at risk of causing osteoporosis, mental disorders, growth retardation, blood disorders, and liver damage. Meanwhile, sibutramine can trigger an increase in blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, and difficulty sleeping.

"The discovery of these dangerous products is very worrying. Products that are claimed to be herbal or traditional medicines, actually contain active substances of drugs whose use must be under medical supervision. This is a violation of the law as well as a real threat to public health," said the Head of BPOM, quoted from the official BPOM website.

Following up on the findings, BPOM through the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) in various regions has carried out enforcement at production, distribution, and retail facilities. Administrative sanctions have also been imposed on business actors, ranging from severe warnings, product security, recall and destruction orders, to the revocation of distribution permits for products that previously had NIE.

BPOM also traced the production and distribution chain further. If criminal elements are found, business actors can be charged under Article 435 jo. Article 138 paragraphs (2) and (3) of Law Number 17 of 2023 concerning Health, with a maximum prison sentence of 12 years or a fine of up to IDR 5 billion.

In addition to domestic supervision, BPOM also receives reports from the ASEAN Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices Alert System (ASEAN PMAS) network. In November 2025, Thailand reported five products containing BKO, consisting of three slimming products with sibutramine and two male stamina products with sildenafil and tadalafil.

Singapore found one pain relief product containing dexamethasone, prednisolone, and diclofenac. Meanwhile, New Caledonia reported one Indonesian product containing tramadol and anti-inflammatory substances with claims to treat gout and lower cholesterol.

The circulation of OBA mixed with BKO is still a major challenge and requires continuous supervision. The head of BPOM emphasized the importance of cooperation between the government, business actors, and the community, including cross-country collaboration as a form of mutual protection.

"We continue to encourage the Academia-Business-Government (ABG) collaboration to realize the circulation of safe and quality medicines and food for the community," said Taruna Ikrar.

BPOM also reminds the public to be more vigilant in choosing OBA products and health supplements, especially those sold online. Consumers are asked to apply the KLIK Check principle, namely check the packaging, check the label, check the distribution permit, and check the expiration date. The distribution permit can be checked through the BPOM Mobile application or the official website www.pom.go.id.

"The community is the front line in maintaining the health and sovereignty of the nation. Don't be tempted by unreasonable promotions and advertisements with instant claims. Don't let illegal products damage the body, economy, and future of our generation," said the Head of BPOM.

The public is also asked not to use products listed in the appendix to this press release or those that have been included in the BPOM's previous public warning list.
