JAKARTA - In recent years there has been a shift in the habits of young people in socializing. Not to hang out or go to entertainment venues like nightclubs, young people now choose sports to socialize.

This was revealed through Starva's annual Year in Sport report, which shows a major change in the pattern of socializing young people.

Quoting from Women's Health, on Saturday, October 25, 2025, through data collected on 135 million users in 190 countries, participation in running clubs increased by 59 percent compared to the previous year.

As many as 58 percent of respondents admitted to making new friends through sports activities. One in five young people from Gen Z even admitted that they had dated someone they met while exercising.

Young people are now making sports a way to connect and socialize. Sports is no longer just about burning calories, but about social connections and living balance," said Strava Chief Business Officer, Zipporah Allen.

The trend of exercise at night also shows changes in the way of socializing among young people. If in the past social interactions occurred at nightclubs or cafes, now many choose a sports studio or fitness room to socialize at night.

"This shows that exercise is now not about extremity, but about balance. The younger generation wants to stay active, but also happy," added Allen.

Meanwhile, Strava data shows that the younger generation tends to like short, light-intensity sports. One in five sports sessions lasted less than 20 minutes, while half of marathon participants now chose to add more rest days to maintain a balance of life.
