JAKARTA The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) has again revealed serious findings related to the circulation of traditional medicinal products that endanger public health. In the results of intensive supervision carried out from January to March 2025, BPOM found six natural medicinal products (OBA), including pedgal linu products and pelangsing supplements that were proven to contain hazardous medicinal chemicals (BKO).

Head of BPOM, Taruna Ikrar said the five of the six findings were illegal products or did not have a BPOM distribution permit number. The six products were found to contain BKO which should not be used in traditional medicine because it could pose a serious health risk.

The chemicals detected include sibutramin and bisacodil, which are commonly used in submersing products, as well as dexsametasons, paracetamols, and sodium cyclophenak which are often found in products with claims of aches pereda linu.

The cadets explained that the addition of chemicals such as sibutramin and bisacodil in pelagsing products can cause dangerous side effects, such as kidney failure, diarrhea, and irritation of the rectum.

Chemicals such as dexametasons and sodium are also creative and have the potential to damage vital organs if used without medical supervision. The use of desammetal, paracetamol, and sodium is klofenak in products with claims of linu sores at risk of causing liver damage, glaukoma, and kidney damage.

BPOM has taken firm steps against these findings. Through technical implementing units throughout Indonesia, BPOM has brought control of the production and distribution facilities of these products, including at the retail level. The steps taken include product security, withdrawal orders from circulation, and destruction.

"BPOM has also given strict administrative sanctions, in the form of strong warnings to the revocation of product distribution permits granted to business actors who produce and/or distribute OBA products containing BKO," said Taruna, quoted from the BPOM website.

Not only that, business actors are also threatened with criminal penalties in accordance with the provisions of Law Number 17 of 2023 concerning Health. The cadets emphasized that violations of product security could lead to severe penalties.

"Business actors are fully responsible for the quality and safety of the products marketed. For those who are proven to have violated, BPOM will not hesitate to take firm action, including imposing criminal sanctions," he said.

He referred to Article 435 Jo. Article 138 paragraphs (2) and (3), which states the threat of imprisonment for a maximum of 12 years or a maximum fine of IDR 5 billion.

Furthermore, BPOM also reminds the public to be more careful in buying health products, especially those circulating on online platforms. Consumers are advised to always check products before buying, such as ensuring distribution permit numbers, packaging conditions, and expiration dates.

"The public is also advised to only buy OBA products from trusted sources and avoid products recorded in the attachment to this press release or what has been announced in the previous BPOM public warning," the cadets appealed.

To ensure product authenticity, BPOM advises the public to use the BPOM Mobile application which can quickly and accurately verify distribution permits. In addition, BPOM continues to encourage the application of the principles of packaging checks, labels, distribution permits, and expiration as a first step in protecting oneself from harmful products.

The cadets also expressed concern that the rampant circulation of products containing BKO not only threatens consumer health, but also damages the image of Indonesian natural medicinal products that have been tested for safety.

The BKO content in OBA products not only endangers health, but can also damage the reputation of Indonesian original OBA products whose safety has been tested.

With this finding, BPOM hopes that the public will be increasingly vigilant and not tempted by instant claims from pelagsing products or sore pereda which is not necessarily safe. BPOM also emphasized its commitment to continue to monitor and take firm action against violations in order to ensure the safety of products circulating in the Indonesian market.
