Behind The Ammar Zoni Case, Why Is Drug Addiction Difficult To Stop?

JAKARTA - Although he has repeatedly felt alive behind bars, it seems that this is not enough to deter Ammar Zoni. Irish Bella's ex-husband returned to dealing with the law after being suspected of being involved in a narcotics trafficking network at the Salemba Detention Center, Central Jakarta.

This latest case dragged six suspects, including Ammar himself. The other five people had the initials A, AP, AM alias KA, ACM, and MR.

The police said that narcotics transactions of methamphetamine and synthetic tobacco were carried out within the detention center. The suspects are said to have used cell phones and messaging applications to communicate and regulate the circulation of these illicit goods.

This illegal activity was carried out while Ammar was still in detention. The father of two is again facing the legal process for his alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

This case adds to the long list of violations of the law that have dragged his name. It is known, this is the fourth time Ammar Zoni has stumbled on a narcotics case. Previously, he was arrested by the West Jakarta Metro Police Narcotics Unit in December 2023 in an apartment in the Serpong area, South Tangerang.

The public was surprised, why a person can be constantly caught in drugs, even though he has been repeatedly imprisoned and felt the consequences.

Many people think that someone who uses drugs repeatedly does it because of his lack of intention to change. However, the medical view actually refers to addiction as a complex brain disease, not just a bad choice or habit.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), addiction is a chronic and recurrence disorder that is characterized by a strong urge to seek and use drugs even though it has a destructive impact.

This condition makes a person lose control of his behavior because his brain has undergone changes due to the use of substances.

Such as heart disease that attacks the heart organs, is addicted to attack the brain, especially areas that regulate motivation, pleasure, and self-control.

Reporting from the American Addiction Centers page on Saturday, October 11, 2025, drugs such as methamphetamine, synthetic marijuana, and other types of narcotics work by manipulating the brain system. When a person uses drugs, it triggers a dopamine spike, which is a chemical compound that makes a person feel euphoric.

More often used, the brain starts to get used to high dopamine levels and eventually loses the ability to enjoy normal things such as delicious foods, sports, or social relationships. As a result, users feel empty without drugs and continue to look for them to get the same sensation.

This change makes addiction very difficult to overcome only with will. After stopping, the brain takes a long time to recover. In many cases, the urge to reuse (relapse) can appear at any time.

There are many reasons why someone like Ammar Zoni can continue to be trapped in a drug circle, including:

1. Chemical effects on the brain

Repeated use makes the brain think that drugs are a major source of pleasure.

2. Psychological problems

Stress, depression, or trauma can encourage a person to seek escape through the forbidden substance.

3. Social environment

Association and easy access to drugs can exacerbate the condition of addiction.

4. Lack of recovery support

Without proper supervision and therapy, it is easy for someone to return to using drugs.

That is why many experts emphasize that addiction is not just a matter of a strong lack of restraint, but of disorders that require long-term medical and psychological treatment.

Addiction can be treated, although the process is not easy and requires a life-long commitment. The first step usually begins with medical detoxification to remove the body from harmful substances, then proceeds with behavioral therapy, counseling, and rehabilitation.

Inpatient programs are suitable for those who require intensive supervision, while outpatient programs are more appropriate for those who are more mentally stable.
