JAKARTA - Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, revealed that his party had received the results of the environmental audit of PT Gag Nikel.
Hanif said that from the results of the audit, a number of deficiencies were found which were then followed up with administrative sanctions in the form of fines.
"We have received the audit of Nickel Gag, so there are some shortcomings, which we have then fined. Then there are changes, because the results of the Environmental Audit are changes in basic environmental inventory," Hanif told the media crew, quoted by Antara, Tuesday, January 27.
He added that in addition to sanctions, the Ministry of Environment also requires changes to the company's basic environmental approval.
Furthermore, said Hanif, the environmental audit was carried out independently, but remained under the guidance of the Ministry of Environment. The assistance was carried out together with academics appointed to ensure that the audit process was objective and in accordance with scientific principles.
"This environmental audit is independent, but we are still accompanied by academics that we nominate. So it is not just released," he added.
Meanwhile, regarding the operational status of Gag Nickel, the environmental audit process can be carried out while activities are running, in accordance with the provisions in the environmental document.
Hanif said that the results of the environmental audit could lead to three possibilities, namely improving environmental approval, changing operational methodology, or revoking environmental permits.
"So he (Gag Nickel) is in the first position, improving, increasing the inventory of his environment," said Hanif.
Previously, the government received complaints from the public regarding mining activities in Raja Ampat, because the location is a center of biodiversity with a vulnerable ecosystem if exposed to potential pollution.
The government has finally revoked four mining business permits (IUP) in Raja Ampat, because some of them are in protected areas. The four IUP revoked were owned by PT Anugerah Surya Pratama, PT Nurham, PT Melia Raymond Perkasa, and PT Kawai Sejahtera.
Meanwhile, PT Gag Nikel, which is a subsidiary of PT Antam Tbk, was temporarily suspended for environmental review and audit. The company resumed operations on Wednesday (3/9).
