JAKARTA - Deputy Minister of Immigration and Corrections of the Republic of Indonesia, Silmy Karim, together with the ranks of the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, carried out a working visit to the Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) in Central Halmahera, North Maluku, on January 12-13, 2026 as part of strengthening the role of immigration services and supervision in supporting strategic industrial areas.
During the visit, the Deputy Minister and his entourage reviewed immigration facilities operating at the domestic-only airport at IWIP, as well as visited a number of key facilities in the industrial area, including ports, power plants, nickel processing facilities, and battery industries.
In his statement, Silmy Karim emphasized that the presence of Immigration in industrial areas has a strategic function in ensuring that investment activities and labor mobility run orderly and support the national economy.
"The economic potential in this region requires strong and responsive immigration services so that industrial and investment activities can run optimally," said Silmy.
He also emphasized that support for industrial areas is the result of joint work between various ministries and agencies.
"We see a strong synergy in the Weda Bay Industrial Estate between the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, the Ministry of Finance through the Directorate General of Customs and Excise, the Quarantine Agency, as well as elements of the TNI and Polri in ensuring that IWIP runs according to rules and supports the target for national economic growth," he said.
Silmy Karim also said that IWIP is now developing as one of the new economic growth centers based on nickel downstream. According to him, the value of investment in the region has reached around Rp500 trillion with a regional economic growth rate of around 20 percent per year, far above the national average.
Director of PT IWIP, Scott Ye, said that the visit of the Deputy Minister strengthened coordination between the government and the area managers.
"We welcome the visit of the Deputy Minister and the relevant ministry staff. The government's presence on the ground is very important to ensure that the operation of industrial areas, including the management of labor and international partners, runs in accordance with the provisions and in line with the direction of national policy. This government support makes the application of rules more consistent and effective," said Scott Ye.
This visit emphasizes the role of Immigration as part of the state's presence in strategic industrial areas. Through professional, adaptive, and integrated services with other agencies, Immigration has become one of the pillars that ensure that investment, labor mobility, and industrial activities can run orderly, safely, and provide real benefits for the national economy.
As an area manager, IWIP continues to strengthen operational standards and compliance systems, including the improvement of area support services, so that industrial activities run safely, orderly, and sustainably.
