JAKARTA - PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk (PGN) as a Pertamina Gas Subholding is committed to encouraging the downstream of natural gas to increase the utilization of natural gas into high-value goods. This initiative is expected to not only expand the benefits of natural gas for the community, but also open up opportunities for the growth of new industries in the country.

"So far, generally, natural gas is only used as fuel. In fact, natural gas (CH4) can be further processed into valuable products such as methanol, ethylene glycol, formic acid, hydrogen and so on. In fact, it can be further developed into ethylene for plastic raw materials, as well as ammonia which can be processed again into urea and nitric acid," explained PGN's Strategy and Business Development Director, Mirza Mahendra, in his statement, Tuesday, December 16.

To increase the added value of natural gas is also closely related to the green economy. Natural gas is known as one of the fossil energy sources with the lowest carbon emission value compared to other fuels, so it plays an important role as a transition energy towards Net Zero Emission 2060 (NZE).

"The benefits of cleaner natural gas are an opportunity to create added value. PGN is preparing three main initiatives to support NZE while moving the green economy. The first program is the use of BioCNG from palm oil waste that is gasified into biogas. Then the development of Carbon Capture Storage, as well as digitization for energy efficiency through networks," explained Mirza.

PGN is also exploring the development of Hydrogen which comes from several non-fossil energy sources that are more environmentally friendly. "PGN is initiating the development of hydrogen and trying to market it as a future fuel," said Mirza.

Mirza emphasized that PGN would continue to strengthen the optimal and sustainable national natural gas ecosystem, in line with the initiation of natural gas downstream. PGN's main focus includes optimizing the utilization of domestic natural gas, the development of natural gas infrastructure in existing and new areas in order to unlock new demand for equitable access, and integrated natural gas management to create affordable and equitable natural gas management.

"PGN supports the government's fundamental asta cita to encourage national energy resilience and self-sufficiency. Through the downstreaming of natural gas, we hope that the added value of national energy will increase, domestic industries will grow, and the energy transition will run smoothly, so that Indonesia will become more independent and ready to lead to Indonesia Gold 2045," concluded Mirza.
