JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Regional Infrastructure and Development (IPK) Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) emphasized the importance of urban development by applying sustainable principles.

This was conveyed by AHY at The 54th EAROPH Regional Conference 2025 entitled "Transforming Urban Landscapes: Driving Progress, Innovation and Sustainability for Global Futures" at the Cikini Hotel, Jakarta, Monday, October 6.

"We need a city that is built on sustainable principles, not just individual projects. Infrastructure is not just steel and concrete, but a forum for dignity and opportunity," said AHY.

According to AHY, a tough city and a forward view is a city that works for all, especially for the most vulnerable.

"True resilience must be embedded in design, not added later. It is always wiser to invest in prevention rather than paying for recovery. That means risk mitigation must be embedded in building rules, flood planning and road and settlement structures," he said.

In addition, according to AHY, cities in the future must be concise, connected both and transit-oriented. When homes, workplaces and basic services are 15 minutes apart from each other, he said, people will gain deeper time, sense of security and social ties.

"The road is not just a space for movement, but an arena for public life and social connections," said AHY.

Furthermore, said AHY, about 70 percent of mankind will live in urban areas in 2050. Thus, he said, urban centers are believed to be the engine of the economy, the center of innovation and cultural meeting points.

However, he continued, the city will also become the largest risk gathering arena of today, such as climate crises, natural disasters, inequality and resource scarcity.

"(Therefore) we must not delay the design of the city of the future until tomorrow. The future of humanity is determined today, on the roads we build, the houses we establish and the communities we foster," he concluded.
