JAKARTA - The Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) revealed that Indonesia will again sign a trade agreement in the form of a Comprehensive Economic Agreement (CEPA) with Canada in 2025.

Director General of International Trade Negotiations of the Ministry of Trade Djatmiko Bris Witjaksono said the negotiation process had been completed, the government would soon sign the Indonesia-Canada Comperhensive Economic Partnership (ICA-CEPA).

"God willing, in the future, we hope that this year we will also sign CEPA, which has also completed its withdrawal from the Americas, namely Canada," he said at a press conference at the Office of the Ministry of Trade, Jakarta, Tuesday, August 12.

Even so, Djatmiko admitted that he could not confirm when the ICA-CEPA would be signed. However, he made sure it would be done this year.

"It's just that we can't say for sure when the time is right, we are still looking for the right time. Because this will be witnessed by the Head of State, involving the delegations of the two governments. So we are still looking for the right time. But we will also sign our targets in 2025," he said.

Djatmiko said Indonesia would have three trade agreements with three countries in the form of CEPA, namely Chile, Peru and Canada this year.

"Well, so that later when this is finished in 2025 we will have three CEPA agreements with three countries. This means that Chile has, then now with Peru, and later with Canada," he said.

In addition, Djatmiko also said that the Ministry of Trade together with other relevant ministries/agencies would continue to accelerate a number of new trade agreements as an effort to diversify the market.

"Those that have been completed, but have not been signed, but will be signed this year are Canada, Eurasia or the EAEU (Ereuraian Economic Union), it is a combination of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia. Then there is Tunisia PTA and the North African region," he explained.

In addition, Djatmiko said the government was also working to accelerate the settlement of trade agreement negotiations with the European Union.

"Later the EU will be next, it's not finished yet so we will try to finish it. The President has announced a political agreement to complete it soon this year. Yes, hopefully in the next few weeks we can really finish it," he said.
