JAKARTA - Children are getting more familiar with digital screens. In the midst of this situation, Minister of Culture Fadli Zon encourages traditional games to return to being a children's growing space, not only as entertainment, but also a means of learning values, cooperation, and character.
This was conveyed by Fadli when attending the Festival of Brave Generation Exploring entitled Let Them Run at The CIBIS Business Park, South Jakarta, Saturday, July 25.
The activities initiated by Betadine Indonesia were held in order to welcome National Children's Day 2026. This festival involves the government, business world, community, media, health workers, educators, and families.
The event featured public discussions, family sports, educational games, to the launch of the Children and Family Activity Inspiration Pocket Book. The book is prepared as a guide for family activities outside of digital screen exposure.
Through this festival, children are invited to learn through physical activities, social interactions, and games that foster creativity.
The Ministry of Culture works together with the Hong Community to present traditional games for children aged 5 to 8 years. A number of folk games are reintroduced, ranging from congklak, bekel, gasing, dam-daman, kelom batok, dragon snake, banana ampar-ampar, cublek-cublek suweng, to cing ciripit.
Fadli said traditional games are part of the object of Cultural Development as regulated in Law Number 5 of 2017.
"Traditional games are one of the objects of Cultural Development that we must continue to live. In the midst of digital technology development, children still need space to play, interact, learn to work together, and get to know the noble values of the nation through real experiences," said Fadli.
According to Fadli, Indonesia has thousands of traditional games that are born from regional cultural diversity. This wealth needs to be documented, preserved, and introduced again to children.
He said the Ministry of Culture was preparing a number of steps to document and register traditional games. The government also plans to develop a museum of traditional Indonesian games.
"The Ministry of Culture is developing various steps to document, register, and introduce them back to the public, including through the development plan for Indonesian traditional game museums," said Fadli.
According to Fadli, cross-sector collaboration is needed so that children can get back to being familiar with games that teach honesty, togetherness, and mutual cooperation.
Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid said that child protection in the digital space must go hand in hand with the provision of a real-world play space.
"We want to present a generation that grows through experience, not just from digital screens," said Meutya.
He said that digital protection needed to be accompanied by opportunities for children to play, move, interact, and get to know local culture.
This festival is also part of support for the implementation of the Government Regulation on the Governance of the Electronic System in Child Protection or PP TUNAS.
