JAKARTA - The Nuclear Energy Supervisory Agency (Bapeten) has issued a site evaluation approval for the Thorcon 500 Nuclear Power Plant (PLTN) on Classa Island, Bangka Belitung Islands. This evaluation application was submitted by PT Thorcon Power Indonesia (PT TPI) on January 21, 2025.
The approval was issued by Bapeten through the Decree of the Head of the Nuclear Energy Supervisory Agency with the number 00003,556,1,300725 dated July 30, 2025.
"Technical evaluations have been completed faster than the schedule set which was originally 1 (one) year to 126 working days," said Wiryono, Director of Installation and Nuclear Materials Licensing (DPIBN), Thursday, August 7.
He added that the completion of a faster technical evaluation than the set schedule showed Bapeten's commitment to support the acceleration of business licensing for the construction of nuclear reactors (PLTN) safely and efficiently.
For information, based on the Regulation of the Nuclear Energy Supervisory Agency Number 1 of 2022 concerning the Implementation of Risk-Based Business Licensing for the Nuclear Sector, the construction and operation process of PLTN must go through the stages of a landed permit, construction permits, commissioning permits, and operating permits.
Through the decision of the Head of Bapeten, PT TPI can carry out the PLTN site evaluation activity in accordance with the Tax Evaluation Program (PET) document and the Tapak Evaluation Management System (SMET) submitted by PT TPI.
PET includes a work plan for activities to evaluate the feasibility of the site in the face of potential external hazards for nuclear reactors.

The impact of external hazards to be evaluated consists of 6 (six) aspects, namely seismic aspects, geotechnical aspects, volcanic aspects, meteorological and hydrological aspects, aspects of events caused by human activities, and aspects of dispersion of radioactive substances.
The SMET contains a framework or system that is used to manage all landed evaluation processes planned for the construction of PLTN.
Head of the Legal, Cooperation and Public Communication Bureau Bapeten Ishak emphasized that safety and security are the principles and foundations of the entire Bapeten surveillance process.
"Bapeten is committed to transparency and independence for oversight and fulfillment of public information needs," said Ishak.
