JAKARTA - The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) revealed the findings of 34 cosmetic products that were proven to contain hazardous or prohibited ingredients, such as mercury, retinoate acid, hydroquinon, lead, methanyl yellow dye, and steroids.
This finding shows that there are still serious violations in the cosmetics industry, both local and imported. The Head of BPOM, Taruna Ikrar explained that of the 34 cosmetics identified, 28 were products from the production contract, 2 were local products, and 4 were imported cosmetics.
"BPOM has taken firm action against cosmetic findings that are proven to contain this dangerous or prohibited material. BPOM has revoked distribution permits and temporarily suspended activities which include stopping production, circulation and importation activities," said Ikrar in a written statement, Friday, August 1.
Not only stopping distribution, BPOM also conducts further investigations to trace the production and circulation process, especially for products produced by parties who are not entitled or do not have the authority.
Through 76 technical implementation units (UPT) spread throughout Indonesia, BPOM has also carried out control in production facilities, distributions, and retail cosmetics. Taruna emphasized that if criminal elements are found in the production and distribution process, BPOM will proceed to the law enforcement stage.
Business actors who are proven to produce or distribute cosmetics that do not meet safety, benefit and quality standards can be subject to criminal sanctions as stipulated in Article 435 jo. Article 138 paragraph (2) of Law Number 17 of 2023 concerning Health. The penalty is up to 12 years in prison or a fine of up to IDR 5 billion.
BPOM urges business actors to comply with applicable laws and regulations and not to use hazardous materials in their products.
BPOM asks the public not to use products that contain hazardous materials, both listed in the attachment to press releases and previously announced by BPOM.
