PT PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP) affirms its commitment to strengthen its role as the main driver of the development of new and renewable energy, especially geothermal to support the acceleration of the national energy transition.

PLN Indonesia Power President Director Edwin Nugraha Putra said geothermal utilization is a long-term solution in maintaining energy security and reducing carbon emissions.

"We view geothermal as the backbone of the energy transition in Indonesia. With the technical capacity and infrastructure we have, as well as the role of PT PLN Indonesia Geothermal as a key player of PLTP in the country, we are ready to optimize the existing potential," he quoted Antara as saying.

Edwin added, this is in line with the launch of the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) of PT PLN (Persero) 2025-2034 by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).

According to the latest PLN RUPTL, it is planned to build an additional power generation capacity of 69.5 gigawatts (GW) from 2025 to 2034.

Of these, 76 percent or 52.9 GW comes from renewable energy and storage, which shows a strong policy direction towards reducing emissions and utilizing clean energy resources.

Especially for geothermal, the government allocates a capacity of 5.2 GW, with a target of achieving an installed capacity of 0.9 GW until 2029.

During the launch of the 2025-2034 PLN RUPTL, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia conveyed that renewable energy such as geothermal should be a priority for national development in the future.

The government encourages all stakeholders, including electricity industry players, to dare to take a strategic role in building an environmentally friendly and sustainable energy ecosystem.

"The government is consistent in encouraging renewable energy as a form of energy transition," said Bahlil.

Edwin continued that PLN Indonesia Power as the Subholding of PT PLN (Persero), which manages geothermal power plants (PLTP) has a key position in developing national geothermals.

Through its subsidiary, PLN Indonesia Geothermal, the company is committed to strengthening its geothermal-based generating portfolio and expanding its development projects in various parts of Indonesia.

Furthermore, Edwin explained that over the last five years, PLN Indonesia Geothermal has produced 5.6 GWh of green energy, which is equivalent to reducing carbon emissions by 4,760 tons of CO2e.

Not only that, its development has also been expanded to the derivative business and the use of high efficiency technology to ensure the sustainability of operations.

In addition to geothermal, PLN Indonesia Power is also ready to develop various other EBT potentials such as hydroelectric power plants (PLTA) and solar power plants (PLTS), as well as open space for investment collaboration through Greennesia and Hydronesia initiatives.

With this strategic role, said Edwin, PLN Indonesia Power continues to transform into the main driver in the use of renewable energy to support the achievement of the net zero emission (NZE) target by 2060.
