JAKARTA - The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said that Indonesia has the potential to become a global food production leader.

This was conveyed by the Assistant Director General/Representation of the FAO Regional for Asia and the Pacific, Alue Dohong, after holding an official meeting with the Minister of Agriculture (Mentan) Andi Amran Sulaiman in Jakarta, Thursday, May 22.

"Indonesia has enormous potential. We are a tropical country, as stated by the Minister of Agriculture earlier, and we can become a global leader in food and agricultural production. This is not only to meet national needs, but also to contribute globally," he said in his statement.

In the midst of a global situation facing the challenges of the food crisis in various countries, Indonesia is considered to have a strategic position as an agricultural country with abundant natural resources and high food production potential.

"I think the policy direction of the minister and vice president is very appropriate. In the future, I want to ensure that close cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture and the FAO Asia Pacific continues to be strengthened," said Alue.

Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman underlined the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration and synergy in strengthening national food security ranging from the central, regional governments, to farmers' businesses.

One of the concrete steps taken by the Ministry of Agriculture is currently in synergy with the Logistics Affairs Agency (Bulog), to strengthen national rice reserves.

"With strong synergy and collaboration between the government, Bulog, and farmers, we are optimistic that the target of 4 million tons of rice reserves will be achieved soon. This shows that Indonesia is getting stronger in maintaining food security," said Amran.

In addition, projections from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) which recorded national rice production in the first half of 2025 reached 18.76 million tons, an increase of 11.17 percent compared to the same period last year.

This increase in production cannot be separated from the success of the government's program in expanding planting land, providing quality fertilizer subsidies at affordable prices, and distributing massive agricultural machine tools (alsintan).
