JAKARTA - The government through the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has prepared a number of strategic steps to achieve the national salt self-sufficiency target in 2027.

Quoted from the upload on the official Instagram account @kkpgoid, Monday, April 14, the government has set a target for food self-sufficiency, including industrial salt in 2027.

"The target of self-sufficiency in salt is in accordance with the Astacita of the President and Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia as outlined in Presidential Decree Number 17 of 2025 concerning the Acceleration of National Settlement Development," wrote the Instagram account @kkpgoid.

The first step is intensification. Intensification is an effort to increase existing salt pond production by mechanization. There are 13,100 hectares of total salt pond land available for conversion into intensification land.

"The people's salt land intensification plan will be implemented in Pantura, Java and Madura with a target area of 3,000 hectares. This revitalization is targeted to produce salt of 150 tons per hectare of the year," he explained.

The second is that the KKP will carry out extensification. Extensification itself is an effort to increase salt production through the development of new ponds.

"The planned extensification of salt ponds in East Nusa Tenggara covering an area of 1,000 hectares uses the method of land management, pumping and use of technology for salt processing. The target will reach a production volume of around 200 tons per hectare per year," explained the KKP.

The last strategic effort that will be carried out by the KKP is the use of modern technology. The KKP encourages the use of modern technology with the private sector in salt production such as Vacuum Salt, which is that the technology of pumping seawater is directly processed into mechanical salt with a capacity of 210,000 tons per year.

Through the implementation of the planned acceleration strategy and scenario, the KKP is optimistic that the national salt self-sufficiency target in 2027 can be achieved, thereby reducing dependence on imports and improving the welfare of local salt farmers.

"Along with that, together with related agencies, the KKP also encourages the construction of an economical cost salt transportation network to reduce shipping costs from producing areas to markets, which are integrated between sea and land," concluded the KKP.
