JAKARTA - Minister of Public Works (PU) Dody Hanggodo spoke about the virality of Public Works Ministry employees who were laid off due to budget cuts of up to Rp 81 trillion.
Dody explained that the employee was an operation and maintenance officer (OP) of water resources.
"Not being sent home, but his work contract has expired. So our OP friends are annual contracts, we update it every year. It's a bit late. All contracts are completed in November-December," he said as quoted from his official Instagram @dody_hanggodo, Friday, February 14th.
Dody said that the OP contract was terminated because the Ministry of Public Works' budget allocation was not yet final after the efficiency.
Therefore, the Ministry of Public Works has not yet continued the contracts of OP employees.
According to him, the budget efficiency process is still ongoing. If the allocation has been completed, continued Dody, then the contracts of OP employees can only be paid.
"Because, right, the budget itself is still in the process of budget politics. Budget politics, right, always starts from the Ministry of Finance and the President. Then to us, we asked the DPR for approval. The DPR is okay, we just returned to the Minister of Finance. Then it can be effective efficiently," he said.

Dody emphasized that his party did not lay off OP employees.
Currently, he said, the Ministry of Public Works is still waiting for the budget efficiency process to be completed, then it can extend the contract of OP employees.
"Actually, there is no laying off, it's just a contract update that we haven't worked on yet, because the budget political process has not been completed," he said.
He considered that OP employees were very important for the Ministry of Public Works and to achieve the ideals of food self-sufficiency. This is because the role of OP is very strategic in the field, especially in dealing with irrigation to irrigate rice fields.
Furthermore, Dody is committed to accelerating the ongoing budget politics.
When it is finished, his party promises to extend the contract of OP employees.
"We are trying to speed up budget politics so that it can be completed soon. Then, a few weeks ago I informed the Director General of Water Resources while signing the contracts with the OPs. Later, all the budget is set to be effective, meaning we just have to pay the rapel," explained Dody.
"If today there are some OP friends who are willing to continue their work, it is very, very necessary to achieve food self-sufficiency. I thank you," he concluded.
