Palm Oil Wins Lawsuit, How's Nickel At WTO?

JAKARTA - Indonesia has succeeded in proving the discrimination of the European Union (EU) in the palm oil trade dispute at the Dispute Settlement Agency of the World Trade Organization or Dispute Settlement Body World Trade Organization (DSB WTO).

This decision is contained in the WTO Panel Decision Result Report or report panel which is circulated on January 10, 2025.

Responding to Indonesia's victory, the Deputy Minister of Trade, Dyah Roro Esti, appreciated Indonesia's victory. He hopes that Indonesia's victory can contribute to the value of Indonesia's trade.

"We hope that this will actually contribute to our overall trade value. Automatically, with our increasing number of exports, our dependence on imports will also decrease," said Roro when met at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Office, Friday, January 17.

Roro hopes that the victory of palm oil can be followed by other commodities belonging to the Republic of Indonesia such as nickel which are currently still disputed at the WTO because they were sued by the European Union.

As is known, Indonesia was sued by the European Union in the World Trade Organization (WTO) for the policy of banning nickel ore exports. Then in October 2022 Indonesia was declared defeated in the lawsuit. Currently, Indonesia is still undergoing an appeal (appeal) process for the defeat.

"We have domestic policies that I think are very, very important, especially with downstreaming. The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources has conveyed and I think this is something very, very important for us to do domestically," continued Roro.

Regarding the progress of Indonesia's appeal, Roro was reluctant to reveal further. However, he hopes that there will be a way out for this process.

"What is clear is that we have a negotiating team at the WTO. We hope that whatever the decision is, we can always find and find a way out," said Roro.
