JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) said that the growth of benchmark to bar chocolate increased dramatically in the last year, although the price of cocoa in the global market reached a record high throughout 2024.

Director General of Agro Industry of the Ministry of Industry Putu Juli Ardika said the cocoa processing industry was experiencing difficult conditions due to the soaring price of raw materials throughout last year. As for 2023, the price of cocoa beans will be US$ 3,280 per ton to 10,556 US dollars per ton in 2024.

"One thing that is encouraging is that this artist industry grows in difficult conditions," Putu said at the National Kakao Workshop at the Ministry of Industry's office, Jakarta, Wednesday, January 15.

According to the Ministry of Industry's records, in 2023 there are 15 artist brown industries and an increase to 47 industries in 2024. Putu assessed that this shows a positive signal that the premium chocolate industry has the potential to develop in the future.

Moreover, said Putu, this is in line with the increasing consumer awareness of quality brown products. Chocolate beans from beans to bars prioritize the quality of raw materials and only use fermented cocoa beans.

"So, he grew up when the raw materials were not cheap. This means that the cocoa artist industry has competitiveness, can be developed and help, which is how we can fill this good price. Because, if it enters premium, it enters the specialty through fermentation," he said.

Even so, he said, the increase in raw material prices would certainly be a major blow to the cocoa processing industry, which is more than 50 percent imported. It is estimated that utilization in 2024 will decrease when compared to 2023 which will reach 61 percent.

On the other hand, Putu said, Indonesian cocoa beans also have privileges that can be an opportunity. He said, the diversity of flavors is distinctive in every cocoa-producing area, such as Jembrana with honey characters, East Nusa Tenggara with the characters of Nutty and Sulawesi with distinctive floral.

"Currently, there are 600 Indonesian chocolate flavors that can be explored for promotion and branding," he added.

It is known that the current condition of the cocoa industry is an opportunity to revive the upstream sector of Indonesia's economy. Along with this, the Ministry of Industry has succeeded in initiating the formation of the Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDP) which will support the development of sustainable cocoa upstream.

One of the activities that has been initiated is the HR competency development program to strengthen the supply chain of sustainable industrial raw materials (cocoa doctor).

In 2024, the Ministry of Industry will produce 37 cocoa doctors who have received training at the Mars Cocoa Academy for 1 month. The cocoa doctors have also provided guidance to farmers' partners training of trainers (ToT) of more than 3,700 farmers.
