Bareskrim Polri Leaks Three Ways To Muzzle Debt Collectors, Professions With The Potential To Become Enemy Of Society

JAKARTA - Uncomfortable stories about debt collectors are often found in the community along with the massive variety of financial services today.

Head of Sub-Directorate V of IKNB Bareskrim Polri Kombes Pol. Ma'mun said this situation could actually be avoided if all stakeholders could work together and carry out activities within the corridors of the applicable law. According to him, there are at least three main things that need attention.

First is the need for a social control method that utilizes information technology systems. Thus, all parties involved in this industry, be it debt collectors, debtors, creditors, the public, to the police, can monitor collection practices in the field.

"Debt collectors have the potential to become enemies of the public and law enforcement agencies if they carry out their activities outside the applicable regulations," he said in a webinar organized by Infobank on Monday, July 26.

Ma'mun added, the negative tendencies that are often attached to debt collection activities are difficult to avoid. But he believes that this can be changed along with the increase in human professionalism in the field. Moreover, this collection service business is considered to be irreversible because it has a fairly high demand from financial service actors.

"The existence of debt collectors cannot be eliminated because their services are needed by the financial industry in Indonesia," he said.

The second is the need for an association forum that oversees a number of debt collection companies so that these business activities can be more focused.

"So it can provide education and legal knowledge for members who are on duty in the field," he said.

Then the third is a legal product that oversees the activities of debt collection companies, including data collection on the people involved in this activity.

"This rule actually already exists, but maybe it needs to be emphasized again and also accompanied by socialization of sanctions to avoid violating the rules," concluded Ma'mun.
