JAKARTA - The rehabilitation of the irrigation network in the Cihanjawar Cikupa Irrigation Area (DI), Sukamakmur District, Bogor Regency, West Java, has a direct impact on agricultural productivity.
A total of 110 hectares of rice fields that are fed by the canal are now able to be planted up to three times a year.
The increase in productivity was marked by an increase in the Cultivation Index (IP) from an average of 200 to 300.
This means that farmers can now harvest up to three times a year thanks to more even water distribution.
The rehabilitation of the 920-meter secondary irrigation network was carried out by the Ministry of Public Works (PU) through Presidential Instruction (Inpres) Number 2 of 2025 concerning the Acceleration of Development, Improvement, Rehabilitation, and Operation and Maintenance of Irrigation Networks to Support Food Self-sufficiency.
The irrigation channel also benefits four farmer groups (Poktan) in the surrounding area by increasing the reliability of water supply, including during the dry season.
Minister of Public Works (PU) Dody Hanggodo said that strengthening irrigation infrastructure is one of the keys to maintaining the sustainability of national food production.
According to him, the availability of water is more secure will encourage increased agricultural production as well as increasing the efficiency of farmers.
"All of these achievements are a manifestation of the Ministry of PU's commitment to ensuring that infrastructure supports food security, education, and regional economic growth," said Dody, quoted from a written statement, Monday, June 29.
The DI Cihanjawar Cikupa irrigation network is the authority of the Bogor Regency Government (Pemkab). Through the Inpres Number 2 of 2025 program, the PU Ministry provides support in the form of rehabilitation of irrigation canals, which was then handed over as an asset grant to the Bogor Regency Government in June 2026.
In addition to the Sukamakmur District, the PU Ministry also rehabilitated the irrigation network in a number of other areas in Bogor Regency, namely the Klapanunggal, Kemang and Caringin Districts.
The total length of the channel handled reached 1.91 kilometers with a coverage of irrigation services covering 338 hectares of irrigated land.
Dody also emphasized the importance of developing a tertiary irrigation network so that water can be distributed more effectively to agricultural land.
"I ask that in addition to drilling deep water, especially for water intended for irrigation of rice fields and gardens, a tertiary irrigation network must also be created," he said.
To accelerate the implementation of the Irrigation Presidential Decree, the PU Ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) in data collection and simultaneous construction of irrigation networks.
The collaboration is expected to produce more accurate planning, so that irrigation development in 2026 and the following years can be implemented faster, more targeted, and data-based.
Through the strengthening of irrigation systems and inter-institutional synergy, the government is optimistic that the productivity of the agricultural sector can continue to be maintained in the midst of the challenges of climate change.
This step is also part of efforts to support the national food self-sufficiency target and improve the welfare of farmers.
