JAKARTA - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) targets the conversion of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to compressed natural gas or compressed natural gas (CNG) to be implemented this year.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources through the Director General of Oil and Gas (Dirjen Migas) Laode Sulaeman said that the implementation of the program will be carried out gradually, starting from major cities on the island of Java.

"This year, it is targeted (to be consumed by the community)," he said, quoted Wednesday, May 6.

Later, he continued, the trial of a 3 Kg CNG tube is projected to be completed within the next 3 months.

Furthermore, Laode also said that the LPG to CNG conversion program has entered the implementation stage, not just a study. Currently, the focus is on providing the appropriate 3 kg size tube.

Later, Laode said that the tube that will be used is likely to be type 4, namely a polymer tube reinforced with composite material so that it is lighter than conventional steel tubes.

"That's what we're after, Mr. Minister (Bahlil Lahadalia) said that in the next three months there will be a type 4 for 3 kg, and from there we will start producing in a more massive amount," said Laode.

However, Laode did not reveal the roadmap for the implementation of the conversion of LPG to CNG. According to him, the roadmap or road map of this program is still being discussed with the Ditjen Migas team, which is directly led by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia.

"The pattern I can't announce yet, it is being prepared by the team, the Minister is also leading directly. So later it will be delivered directly by the Minister, because this has a side of preparing the tube, there is distribution, so it must match," said Laode.

As previously reported, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, said the government was developing CNG in a 3 kg tube package as an alternative to LPG for households.

The Chairman of the Golkar Party said that CNG is not a new thing because it has started to be implemented in a number of hotels, restaurants, and some Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programs.

"For the 3 kilograms, it is just going to be made. And this is 30-40 percent cheaper," explained Bahlil.
