JAKARTA - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is conducting a study on the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to be a substitute for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), which is mostly still imported from abroad.

For information, currently, national LPG consumption reaches 8.6 million tons per year. From this figure, only 1.6-1.7 million tons are produced domestically and the rest are met by imports.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia said that the plan to use CNG is still in the discussion stage. His party will immediately finalize it so that energy independence can be realized.

"Now it is still under discussion, which I just reported, is that we are making CNG. But this is still under discussion, I have to finalize it, and this is one of the best alternatives for us to encourage our energy independence in the LPG sector so that we can do it," said Bahlil after a Limited Meeting with President Prabowo, Monday, April 27.

Bahlil explained that the raw materials for CNG can be met from domestic industries, namely from C1 and C2 liquid gas which is then compressed (compressed) to a certain pressure. As for C1-C2 liquid gas is natural gas (natural gas) dominated by methane (C1) and ethane (C2) components that have been liquefied to facilitate storage and transportation. Currently, the Business Entity engaged in the CNG sector is 57 business entities.

"If CNG is from gas, but it is from liquid gas C1, C2. And it is an industry in our country. But he uses one tool that can then be pressed up to 250 to 400 bar, the pressure. So that the use of it can be good. But again, this is still in the consolidation phase so that we can achieve better results," he explained.

CNG itself has been widely used by various industries, such as hotels, restaurants, and a number of Gas Fuel Filling Stations (SPBG), whose fuel is obtained from within the country. Therefore, the Government plans to optimize the use of domestic energy.

"But for CNG, some of it has been used. For hotels, restaurants, it has been used. Some of the SPBG have also been used. And the fuel is not imported, it is all domestic. Well, this is what we are trying, we are looking for alternatives. Because in the era of uncertain geopolitics, we must find a formula to achieve survival mode. All production in the country, that is what we prioritize," said Bahlil.
