JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) has accelerated the construction of 252 temporary housing units (huntara) on an area of 2.6 hectares (ha) for people affected by flash floods in South Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra.
The construction of the huntara is part of the emergency handling after the flood to ensure that the affected people can immediately occupy decent, safe housing and meet basic needs.
Minister PU Dody Hanggodo conveyed the importance of accelerating the fulfillment of basic needs so that housing is truly ready to be inhabited by the community.
"Housing must be ready in its entirety. Clean water should not be a problem when people start occupying. Sanitation, including electricity, must be ensured to function before the residence is inhabited," said Dody as quoted from an official statement, Saturday, February 7.
At the location, the PU Ministry built 252 housing units consisting of 21 modular blocks, with each block containing 12 housing units.
The housing is intended for approximately 245 affected families or approximately 1,800 people, with the arrangement of prospective residents entirely carried out by the local government.
The construction of the huntara was carried out on land with an area of approximately 2.6 ha out of a total available land of approximately 16.8 ha.
Meanwhile, the remaining land will be further developed for the construction of permanent housing (huntap) which is planned to be carried out by the Ministry of Housing and Settlements (PKP).
Technically, the residence is built using a modular construction system to speed up the work time.
The building structure uses light steel frames and CNP steel, with sandwich panel walls, metal roof cover and GRC floors with vinyl finishing.
Each unit is designed to have adequate ventilation and lighting to support the comfort of residents during the temporary stay.
Each modular block is equipped with communal sanitation facilities in the form of six toilets and six showers, consisting of three toilets and showers for women and three toilets and showers for men.
Overall, the area has 126 toilet units and 126 shower units. In addition, each block is also equipped with a shared kitchen to support the daily activities of residents.
The residential area is also equipped with various supporting facilities, including a mosque, multipurpose building, communal kitchen, washing area, communal room, guard post, temporary shelter (TPS).
Then, there is a green area, children's playground, sports fields, and parking areas, to support the social needs and activities of residents.
The construction of the South Tapanuli residential house is targeted to be completed before Ramadan.
Thus, the affected community can immediately occupy the huntara while waiting for the completion of the huntap construction.
In its implementation, the PU Ministry collaborates with local governments, BUMN Karya and is supported by PLN as a provider of electricity and other technical units in the PU Ministry for the provision of clean water and supporting infrastructure.
"We are committed to ensuring that all stages of construction are carried out on time and according to standards, so that these residential houses can provide a sense of security and dignity for people affected by disasters in South Tapanuli," added Dody.
