JAKARTA - The National Police's Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) revealed that it had recorded at least 1,517 illegal mining spread throughout Indonesia.

The area with the most mining activities is North Sumatra with 396 illegal mines.

Wadirtipidter Bareskrim Polri Feby Dapot Hutagalung said the number was the result of mapping from 38 provinces throughout Indonesia.

"In almost all provinces there are illegal mining activities. From Aceh to Papua, everything is Indonesia's natural wealth which is rich in natural resources but is not used properly," Feby said at the Minerba Convex event, Thursday, October 16.

He added that the illegal mining commodities that were successfully recorded by the National Police included gold, sand, soil excavations, coal, andensite, tin and so on.

Feby also said that most of the illegal mines that were successfully recorded were also arrested by Polri officers, party members, traditional leaders and community leaders.

"So this is a crucial problem in the field when we will take firm action," he explained.

Based on data collected from 2023 to 2025, Feby said that he could only take action against 108 cases.
