MIND ID Builds Sustainable Industry Through Downstream Bauxite

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Mining Industry Holding MIND ID strengthens its strategic role in building a sustainable industrial ecosystem through mineral downstreaming, especially bauxite which is processed into aluminum with high added value.

The effort was carried out through PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminum (Inalum) as the largest aluminum smelter in Indonesia which is now part of MIND ID.

"Bauksit is worth around US$40, after processing it into alumina and then aluminum value can reach up to US$2,800. This is not only a matter of numbers, but also a real contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), job creation, and the establishment of a sustainable industrial ecosystem," said Inalum Head Business and Development Group Al Zufri as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, August 28.

He added that the Inalum and ANTAM joint ventures, namely PT Borneo Alumina Indonesia as the manager of the Smelter Grade Alumina Refinery (SGAR) in Mempawah, are proof of how solid mineral supply chains are able to create certainty of raw materials for Indonesia's future industrialization.

Downstreaming is the foundation of sustainable industrial development. By 2025, we will fully use domestic alumina in line with the implementation of the Minerba Law," he said.

In addition to the economic aspect, Inalum also supports the national decarbonization agenda. The company has started a substitution program for the use of High-Speed Diesel (HSD) B30 to become Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in Baking Plant Inalum which has succeeded in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 3,700 tCO2e per year.
