JAKARTA - Member of Commission VI of the Indonesian House of Representatives from the PDIP faction, Rieke Diah Pitaloka, questioned the type of Boeing aircraft that will be purchased by PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. This is because many Boeing aircraft are currently prohibited from flying.

Rieke also reminded BPI Danantara not to make the wrong steps in purchasing planes. Moreover, many countries also refuse to buy Boeing planes.

This was conveyed by Rieke in a working meeting of Commission VI of the DPR with the Minister of SOEs Erick Thohir and the management of BPI Danantara, at the DPR Building, Jakarta, Wednesday, July 23.

"So how do there be negotiations to buy 737 MAX, it's grounded and then the 787 Dreamliners are also grounded. Which Boeing should be purchased? while others refuse to buy Boeing," he said.

Even so, Rieke admitted that the government had no choice in purchasing this Boeing aircraft. This is because the purchase of this aircraft is one of the requirements in negotiating the reciprocal rate with the United States (US).

"But America will definitely force it, because Boeing is one of the symbols of America's economy, but it doesn't sell, it's also a matter of economic symbols," he said.

In addition, Rieke also warned Danantara to monitor the process of purchasing the Boeing aircraft. He did not want any more financial problems to occur within Garuda Indonesia as a result of the purchase of the aircraft.

"Kita tahu kemarin dalam bisnis itu pembelian Boeing dan Bombardier oleh BUMN yang bernama Garuda itu menyebabkan masalah keuangan yang terjadi sampai sekarang," katanya.

Previously reported, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto revealed that the plan to purchase 50 Boeing aircraft was part of Trump's tariff negotiations.

Airlangga explained that currently the process of purchasing aircraft is still in the process of negotiating business to business between Boeing and Garuda Indonesia.

"The Garuda aircraft is in the process of negotiating business between Boeing and Garuda. So we will wait for further developments technically later," Airlangga said at a press conference, Monday, July 21.

Previously, Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Susiwijono Moegiarso, emphasized that the agreement was still in its early stages so that no contract value had yet been established.

"Yesterday's MoU also hasn't (there is) what Garuda has yet to sign, the new signature is for energy with agriculture," he told the media crew, Friday, July 18.

"But we have explored that there will be an agreement there but it still depends on business considerations, and so on," he added.
