The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) through the Directorate General of Sea Transportation has opened its voice regarding the incident of blocking access by truck drivers at Ketapang Port, Banyuwangi, which resulted in a total traffic jam yesterday.

Director General of Sea Transportation Muhammad Masyhud said based on a report received from the Tanjung Wangi Class III KSOP, the blocking was carried out as a form of protest over the limited number of ships operating due to ship inspections at the LCM pier.

Masyhud said the inspection was an important step taken to ensure shipping safety and prevent the recurrence of the tragedy of the sinking of KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya.

Based on initial reports, he continued, out of a total of 54 ships inspected, 15 ships were declared not eligible for sailing, while 39 ships were declared seaworthy.

"The limited number of ships causes long queues that lead to protests by truck drivers," he said in an official statement, Thursday, July 17.

Masyhud said that until yesterday afternoon, the results of the latest picking test showed that there were an additional 6 ships that had been declared seaworthy, bringing a total of 45 ships that could operate serving shipping in the Bali Strait.

"The condition of the queue since this afternoon has gradually returned to normal and there is no blocking of access," he said.

He also said that his party continues to carry out intensive coordination with related parties to ensure the smooth flow of vehicles and services at Ketapang Port, Banyuwangi.

"The safety of passengers and the smooth flow of logistics are always the main priority of the Directorate General of Sea Transportation. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide the latest information if there are further developments," he said.
