JAKARTA - President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia, Tony Wenas opened his voice regarding the statement by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who stated that he would get full access to various Indonesian resources, including copper.

Tony admitted that so far the United States is not one of the countries that is the goal of importing copper produced by the Freeport smelter.

"We haven't sold it to America all this time. Most of them go to China, China," he said, in Jakarta, Wednesday, July 16.

Regarding Trump's statement that he would fully access natural resources, Tony said it was the government's authority.

He said, PTFI as a state-owned company will continue to carry out mining activities in accordance with safe and sustainable procedures.

On the other hand, mining activities at PTFI will also continue to follow the Work Plan and Budget (RKAB) which was previously granted by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).

"If we are in the mine, we can't if 'Oh there is a demand, we increase production capacity'. It can't be like that. The mines have been well planned," explained Tony.

Tony added that actually PTFI had succeeded in downstreaming products by successfully re-operating the smelter after the previous fire incident.

To that end, regarding the US intervention in copper commodities, Tony left this entirely to the government.

PTFI as a company that produces copper will continue to carry out production activities for cathodes for domestic needs.

"With the cooper cathode already starting production, it is planned that next week the first production of the new smelter," he said.

However, Tony did not rule out the possibility that later there would be a decline in demand from China for the copper commodities produced by PTFI. This is because there is a possibility that the US will impose a large tariff on copper derivative products purchased by China from the US.

"If the derivative industry purchased from us is subject to US tariffs, of course, demand will decrease," said Tony.

Previously, United States President Donald J Trump announced that an agreement had been reached between himself and Indonesia through a direct dialogue with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

As a result of these negotiations, Trump stated that the import rate of 19 percent would be applied to Indonesian products entering the US.

Meanwhile, the United States will have access to various Indonesian resources, including copper.
