JAKARTA - President Director of PT KAI Didiek Hartantyo emphasized that level crossings must be changed to not in the same field in order to ensure the safety of residents in the midst of increasing traffic and train travel.

"Hopefully in the future the level crossing will be changed to a non-field crossing. Traffic is getting denser, train users are getting more and more so that the potential for temperan (collision) will increase if the traffic method is like this," he said, quoting Antara.

Didiek conveyed this when asked for a response regarding a number of accident incidents that occurred at the train crossing.

One of the cases that occurred was a collision between a train and a wooden cargo truck suspected of violating the railroad tracks on Jalan Perlantasan Langsung (JPL) 11 at km 7+600/700 between Indro Station and Kandangan, Gresik, East Java, to be precise at the crossing it was not guarded (register) on Tuesday (8/4).

As a result of the incident, the assistant driver of the Commuter Line (CL) Jegala, Indro-Sidoarjo, died.

Then the case of a collision between the commuter line and a car minus at the JPL level crossing No. 27 on the Cilebut 'Bogor route, West Java, on Saturday (19/4). Luckily all users and drivers survived and were not injured as a result of the incident.

Responding to this, Didiek expressed his hope that level crossings could be changed to non-field crossings to adjust traffic growth and increase the number of national rail trips.

He also explained that based on Law Number 22 of 2007 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation, the responsibility for crossing a level is in the hands of the road owner concerned.

He said, for national roads it is the responsibility of the Ministry of Public Works, provincial roads are borne by the provincial government, while district and city roads are the authority of their respective regional governments.

Didiek also emphasized the importance of the role of all parties who have the authority to the road so that they can work together to secure level crossings in order to reduce the number of traffic accidents around the railroad tracks.

"Well, the hope is that all parties will move to secure the crossing," said Didiek.

Previously, PT KAI had closed 74 level crossings along the first quarter of 2025 to prevent fatal accidents on railway lines that pose a risk of life safety and harm to various parties.

KAI Vice President Public Relations Anne Purba in Jakarta, Thursday (10/4) said the move was in line with the Regulation of the Minister of Transportation Number 94 of 2018 Article 2, which requires the closure of crossings that do not have a JPL number, are not guarded, and/or do not have a door with a width of less than two meters.

Based on KAI data, currently there are 3,693 level crossing points throughout Indonesia, with a composition of 1,883 points (50.98 percent) guarded and 1,810 points (49.01 percent) not guarded.
