JAKARTA - The sustainability program of PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG) and its subsidiaries throughout the operational area not only focuses on preserving the natural ecosystem, but also provides economic benefits for the local community. Through the innovation of environmental and social management programs, GIS is noted to have created jobs for more than 20 thousand people by 2024.

These innovations include the Cooperative Caring for Earth (Korsa Bumi) and the Paku Bumi program owned by PT Solusi Bangun Indonesia Tbk (SBI) Narogong Factory which opened jobs for 11,345 residents of West Java. In Central Java, there is the Bumi Kartini owned by PT Semen Gresik in Rembang and the Baruwani Ranajaya project and Baruwani Circular Hub owned by SBI Cilacap Factory in Central Java which created jobs for 8,194 people.

Furthermore, in East Java, there is a Tuban Factory GIS sustainability project in the form of Ecopark Kempansemi and a sustainability project owned by SBI Tuban Factory, namely Mliwang Metubanyune and the Banyusora project. The three projects created 897 jobs.

Outside Java, environmental and social management innovations that have attracted attention include the Revitalization of Bilih Fish and Mrs. Andra Si Energik by PT Semen Padang in West Sumatra which has printed 953 workers. Likewise, the Joint Solutions to Protect the Coastal and Marine Ecosystems Free of Waste (Sobat the Abes) by PT Solusi Bangun Andalas in Aceh have opened 67 jobs.

SIG's Corporate Secretary, Vita Mahreyni said, GIS presents environmental and social innovation in line with the Company's commitment to carrying out business activities responsibly and adhering to the three principles of sustainability, namely prosperity (prosperity), society (people), and the earth (planet).

"SIG has proven that business activities can run in harmony with nature and social life. The absorption of more than 20 thousand workers from the community around the Company's operations, shows the success of the innovation and collaboration carried out by SIG in environmental and social aspects. This is our contribution to the direction of the Ministry of SOEs and Asta Cita President Prabowo Subianto to create a harmonious life with the environment and nature, as well as poverty eradication," said Vita Mahreyni, in her statement, Monday, May 5.

Vita Mahreyni revealed, one of the flagship programs for environmental conservation and social development of GIS, namely Ecopark Kambangsemi in Tlogowaru Village, Tuban, East Java. Ecopark, which is now a tourist destination for agricultural, livestock and fishery education, not only restores the function of mining land and supports efforts to preserve biodiversity, but also becomes a forum for community empowerment.

Currently, Ecopark Kambangsemi empowers hundreds of communities, including 87 managers, 527 green belt farmers (green belts), 73 workers on reclamation lands, and 16 MSME activists, with a total of 2,630 beneficiaries in the Tuban area. The results of the evaluation study show that the Ecopark Kambangsemi Social Return on Investment (SROI) ratio is 2.63. This means that every 1 rupiah invested leads to economic benefits ranging from Rp. 2.63 for the community.

Other flagship programs have come from a subsidiary of GIS, PT Semen Padang, namely the conservation of bilih fish which has been carried out with LPPPM Bung Hatta University since 2018. The endemic fish of Lake Singkarak has become a source of livelihood for the people around Lake Singkarak, but is threatened with extinction. This program is expected to save bilih fish from extinction, protect the livelihoods of local communities, and achieve the availability of sustainable products.

To date, around 17,000 bilih fish have been deployed back to Lake Singkarak. This has an impact on increasing the catch of Nagari Sumpur fishermen from an average of 3 kg/day/nelayan to 7 kg/day/neleayan and an increase in fishermen's income by Rp4.5 million/month/nealayan. This program has provided benefits for 149 fishermen with a total benefit value of Rp5.39 billion. Based on the results of the evaluation study, it shows that the SROI for the fish conservation program is 13.97.

"The advantages of environmental and social innovation SIG have received recognition from the Ministry of Environment (KLH) by winning three Gold PROPER awards and five Green PROPER awards in 2024. GIS is considered to have the above required performance (beyond compliance) with the results of environmental quality and better community welfare. In the future, SIG will continue to present innovative programs that have a big impact and can be directly felt by stakeholders," said Vita Mahreyni.
