JAKARTA - Chairperson of the Audit Board of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) Sophia Wattimena said that women's participation in governance must be improved considering gender equality has a close correlation with the integrity level of a nation.

This was conveyed by Sophia during the celebration of Kartini Day which was held by the OJK in a hybrid manner in Jakarta, Tuesday, April 22. In his speech, he conveyed the urgency of strengthening integrity among Indonesian women, especially in the financial services sector.

We see that gender equality has a close correlation with the integrity level of a nation. Countries with a low gender inequality index tend to have a low level of corruption. This is a reflection that women's participation in governance must be improved," Sophia said, quoted by Antara.

He also highlighted a number of socio-economic challenges faced by women today, ranging from the low level of education, the impact of consumptive culture due to the phenomenon of FOMO (fear of missing out), to the high level of victims of illegal online loans, especially among housewives and teachers.

"Instilling the value of integrity is not enough just as a discourse. It must be started early on, from home, through healthy and wise parenting. Indonesian women have a key role in shaping an honest, resilient and intelligent generation," Sophia said.

On the same occasion, Deputy Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Veronica Tan also invited the public to realize the important role of women not only as household administrators, but also as future generation educators.

"We have to be aware that women from the start are agents of change. But for too long they don't know that they have rights, have dreams, and are capable of extraordinary things. Right now, our job is to create space and ecosystems that encourage women to be aware, recognized and empowered," said Veronica.

The Kartini Day celebration, which was held by the OJK, was attended by more than 200 participants in person and around 3,000 online participants who came from internal OJK, stakeholders, and members of Commission XI DPR RI.

In this activity, OJK underlined the importance of women's role in maintaining anti-fraud culture and integrity.

This is in line with various initiatives carried out by the OJK, including its active role in maintaining integrity through understanding and implementation of the prohibition of gratuities that can be considered bribery and reporting obligations.

In addition, involvement in reporting indications of fraud or ethical violations via email, website, or written letter according to the channel provided by the OJK, namely the reporting channel for alleged violations through the whistleblowing system (WBS).

OJK itself has shown its commitment through Anti-Bribery Management certification (SMAP) in all work units, strict gratification control, and synergy with the KPK in printing certified anti-corruption counselors.
