JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) also supports the achievement of the Food Swasembada Program launched by President Prabowo Subianto. One of the efforts made was to build a dam.

The Minister of Public Works (PU), Dody Hanggodo, said that dams are one of the important infrastructures that can function as water reservoirs. So, later the stored water can be used to irrigate the fields to the furthest distance.

"Our task at the Ministry of Public Works in supporting Pak Prabowo's large program, namely Food Swasembada, how can these waters wherever he is, get to the furthest fields," said Dody as quoted from the video upload on the official Instagram account @kementerianpu, Saturday, 19 April 2025.

"Because of that, in the last few years we built many dams. 'Right, there are also small dams, small reservoirs," he said.

According to Dody, the big target that the Ministry of Public Works wants to achieve is not to let rainwater flow directly into the sea to prevent flooding.

"Our big target is that when the rainwater rains, it doesn't become a flood, it doesn't immediately run to the sea. However, then we accommodate it," he said.

Thus, he said, it is hoped that the water stored in the dam can be used during the dry season to irrigate the fields to the furthest distance.

"So, during the dry season, we can use this water to irrigate the fields to the far end," said Dody.

Dody assessed that more than 90 percent of the dams built by the Ministry of Public Works function to support rice fields in the country, especially in order to achieve Food Swasembada.

"As many as 90 percent plus (more) the dams we built were to support rice fields."

"That's what we have to convince that, yes, the irrigation channel is primary, secondary, tertiary is well connected and correct," he said.

As for the era of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi)'s leadership during the 2014-2024 period, the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) succeeded in completing a number of infrastructures to increase competitiveness and support economic growth.

In the field of water resources, the Ministry of PUPR through the Directorate General of Water Resources has successfully completed the construction of 53 dams out of 61 dam units built.

The dams that have been completed include Sepaku Semoi, Ameroro, Leuwikeris, Way Sekampung, and Kuningan.

The plan is that by early 2025, the Ministry of PUPR, which is now being broken down into the Ministry of Public Works (PU), will inaugurate six dams that have been completed in the Jokowi administration era.

The six dams are the Rukoh Dam (Aceh), the Keureuto Dam (Aceh), the Jlantah Dam (Central Java), Sidan Dam (Bali), the Marangkayu Dam (East Kalimantan), and the Meninting Dam (West Nusa Tenggara).

Meanwhile, for this year's work plan, the Ministry of Public Works will work on a number of projects, such as the construction of 16 dam units, 10 thousand hectares of irrigation networks, and the rehabilitation of 45,000 irrigation networks.

Then, build 139 kilometers of roads; 5,510 meters of bridge; 336 meters of flyover; 20.52 kilometers of expressways aka toll roads; as well as the preservation of 1,545 kilometers of roads and 122,568 meters of bridges.

In addition, there are still a number of projects in the manufacturing and strategic infrastructure sector.
