JAKARTA - Post-mining land management innovation, the 'Sustainable Quarry Initiative', which was run by PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG) at Tuban Factory, East Java, won the Main Award for the Sustainability category at the IDX Channel Anugerah Innovation Indonesia (ICAII) 2024. The award was received by the Chief of Risk, Strategy & Sustainability SIG, Antonius Ardian Managed at the Main Hall of the Indonesia Stock Exchange, Jakarta, on Tuesday 10 December.
ICAII 2024, which carries the theme Leading Innovation Through Dynamic Business Modelling For Sustainable Future, is an event of appreciation for companies and issuers who have succeeded in carrying out sustainable innovations so that they can provide many benefits to various parties.
SIG's Corporate Secretary, Vita Mahreyni said, the spirit of innovation has cultivated and become an inseparable part of the journey of the GIS transformation. With innovation, GIS continues to create various breakthroughs to improve operational excellence that supports the Company's performance without neglecting social and environmental aspects. This is in line with the direction of the Ministry of SOEs so that state-owned companies carry out business transformation towards a green economy to create economic, social and environmental benefits.
"Innovation is energy for GIS to increase the Company's competitiveness so that it is able to face every challenge and always be at the forefront. ICAII 2024 is a place to recognize the superiority of GIS innovation, especially Land Management Innovation after the Sustainable Quarry Initiative which is one of the many innovations in GIS," said Vita Mahreyni, in her statement, Monday, December 16.
Through the innovation of the Sustainable Quarry Initiative, SIG developed the Ecopark Kambang Semi on the post-mining land of the Tuban Factory, East Java, as a means of agricultural, livestock, and fishery educational tourism. In line with the Ecopark Kambang Semi Roadmap, in 2022 SIG initiated a program to utilize corn plants and corn tuna waste so that it can provide local economic benefits through agriculture and restore the ecological function of land. In addition, SIG also encourages the use of corn tuna waste as an alternative fuel in the cement production process.
The empowerment of the community around the factory through the optimization of corn plants with the circular's economic principle includes a number of activities, ranging from food processing such as corn rice, corn snacks, corn balls and other types of food. Meanwhile, corn tuna waste is processed into additional ingredients for animal feed, making brickets, and fungal baglogs.

Vita Mahreyni added that the use of corn barrel waste as an alternative environmentally friendly fuel to support the production of green cement also provides economic benefits for farmers, as well as helps the Company achieve its operational excellence target. By using corn tuna waste as an alternative fuel, SIG has the potential to reduce fuel costs to Rp947 million per year. This initiative also helps the Company reduce CO2 from the cement production process to 4,416 tons of CO2 per year.
"The Sustainable Quarry Initiative innovation has proven to be successful in improving the community's economy and at the same time protecting the environment from the negative impacts caused by corn cang waste that is not well managed. GIS is committed to always maintaining the spirit of innovation in order to provide solutions and products for quality and environmentally friendly building materials with increasingly professional operational excellence and services," said Vita Mahreyni.
