GIS's Commitment And Sustainability Strategy Rewarded By Gold's Ranking In The Asia Sustainability Reporting Rating Award 2024

JAKARTA - PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG) won Gold's ranking in the ranking of the sustainability report (sustainability report), Asia Sustainability Reporting Rating (ASRRAT) 2024, which was carried out by the National Center for Corporate Reporting in collaboration with the Institute of Certified Sustainability Practicers. A subsidiary of GIS, PT Semen Baturaja Tbk, also won Gold's ranking at the same event.

GIS is considered to have presented a transparent and accountable sustainability report, as well as meeting the standards of The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) 2021, an international organization that provides the standard for sustainability reports. The award was received by the Director of Operations of SIG, Reni Wulandari at the 2024 ADRAT Award at Raffles Hotel Jakarta, on Thursday 21 November.

The ASRRAT Award is an appreciation for companies and institutions for the quality of the report on sustainability and commitment to the best practices in sustainable governance. In 2024, ASRRAT was attended by 70 organizations, both companies from the private and public sectors, as well as tertiary institutions. The participants not only came from Indonesia, but also abroad such as Bangladesh and the Philippines. The assessment was carried out by competent assessors who came from academics and expert practitioners.

SIG Operations Director, Reni Wulandari said, sustainability is a foothold that strengthens GIS's steps to continue to move forward and face challenges to realize sustainable development. GIS's commitment to sustainability is reflected in the SIG 2030 Sustainability Roadmap on the Company's business strategy that upholds ethical value and responsibility includes three pillars of sustainability, namely encouraging sustainable solutions and innovation, protecting the environment, and creating value for employees and communities.

The sustainability report is a form of GIS transparency and accountability in reporting the Company's sustainability performance, which includes economic, environmental, social, and governance aspects. For GIS, the sustainability report is not limited to fulfilling regulations, but also as an information medium for stakeholders about strategies, targets, future steps, as well as projections for the operational performance and business conditions of SIG in the future," said Reni Wulandari.

Reni Wulandari added that sustainability-based operations are a must to increase advantages that support the performance growth and resilience of the Company's business in the future. In the midst of climate change issues that result in extreme weather, SIG continues to innovate to carry out environmentally friendly operations through Production Excellence.

Starting from mining activities, GIS implements good mining engineering principles consistently by prioritizing workers' safety and health, environmental sustainability, and the welfare of the people around the mine. Commitment to carrying out sustainable mining, bringing GIS to 16 2024 Good Mining Practice Awards from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).

SIG also runs a sustainable production process by applying circular economic principles, one of which is realized through the use of alternative fuels from agricultural and industrial waste, urban waste (municipal solid waste) which is processed into refuse-derived fuel (RDF), biomass, and other sources, to replace up to 20 percent of the use of coal fuel by 2030.

On the other hand, alternative fuel use initiatives have helped the Company in reducing CO2 emissions per tonne of cement produced by up to 38 percent lower than conventional cement.

The focus of GIS on reducing CO2 emissions is also carried out through the use of hydrogen injection to optimize the combustion process in cement kilns, thereby increasing productivity and efficiency in thermal and electrical energy, as well as developing renewable energy through the use of solar panels for substitution of electrical energy in operational units, and optimization of exhaust hot gas from the cement production process (Waste-Heat Recovery Power Generation).

Thanks to various efforts that have been made, until 2023 SIG has succeeded in reducing 17.37 percent of the intensity of CO2 coverage 1 (from operations) compared to the 2010 baseline. Meanwhile, coverage of 2 (indirect energy use) was successfully reduced by 5.22 percent from the 2019 baseline.
