JAKARTA - Science and technology company Merck has confirmed its sustainability commitment to transition to renewable energy by implementing photovoltaic (PV) solar panel installations on the roof of its factory in Jakarta.
Site Director of PT Merck Tbk, Arryo Aritrixso Wachjuwidajat stated that in addition to installing solar panels, the company also purchased a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) from PT PLN (Persero).
"This initiative is in line with the company's sustainability targets, one of which is the target of reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions," said Arryo in his statement in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Wednesday, October 23.
He said the company is committed to continuing to reduce environmental impacts, both through reducing carbon emissions and increasing the use of renewable energy.
By 2030, he added, his party is targeting a reduction in direct (Scope 1) and indirect (Scope 2) GHG emissions by 50 percent compared to the base year 2020, and the use of 80 percent renewable energy in operations as part of the global towards a more sustainable future.
In addition to the physical installation of solar panels, he continued, the company has also taken proactive steps by purchasing green energy through REC from PLN Persero which has been used for factory operations since 2022.
With this step, according to him, it will increase the portfolio of electrical energy from renewable energy to 40 percent by 2026.
By 2040, the company targets to achieve climate neutrality and reduce its resource consumption.
Meanwhile, the installation of solar panels on the factory roof carried out by PT PLN Indonesia Geothermal subsidiary PT PLN Indonesia Power covers an area of 2,100 square meters with a total of 817 solar modules.
