JAKARTA - PT Pertamina (Persero) is aggressively reducing emissions through C02 injection with CO2-EOR technology as part of Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS).
At the same time, the CO2 injection in the Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) method will increase the rate of oil extraction that contributes to increasing Pertamina's oil and gas production.
Pertamina President Director Nicke Widyawati said Indonesia has great potential in implementing CCUS and EOR technology to reduce emissions and maintain energy security.
Nicke said the CCUS project at Sukowati Bojonegoro Field, East Java, is an example as well as an acceleration of technology development in other oil and gas fields in Indonesia.
"The success of this project is expected to be a model for similar initiatives in the future, and can create positive multiplier effects, and support economic growth," Nicke explained in a statement to the media, Monday, October 14.
Nicke added that this project also creates investment opportunities.
Nicke said, by making efforts to increase production and also potentially storing large CO2, Indonesia can attract investment in CCUS projects, especially from developed countries, as in Japan.
"This will not only increase the storage capacity of CO2 but also encourage innovation in related industries," explained Nicke.
Meanwhile, Pertamina's Vice President for Corporate Communication, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, said that cooperation with JOGMEC and JAPEX is the Company's commitment to accelerating the application of CCUS technology in the Pertamina oil and gas field.
"Strategic cooperation with Japan has been successfully carried out at Jatibarang Indramayu Field and is now being continued at Sukowati Field, Bojonegoro, East Java. This collaboration is Pertamina's commitment to decarbonization as well as increasing national oil and gas production," said Fadjar.
The C02 injection uses a specially designed equipment technology specifically to inject CO2 with a volume of 100 tons per day for 25 days.
The C02 injection was carried out in SKW-26 with a liquid or gas phase at a well pressure of 1000 1500 psi.

Fadjar added that the C02 inter-well injection was the second phase of the trial after the first phase of injection which was carried out using the Huff and puff method at Sukowati Field at the end of 2023.
"After the second stage of injection, Pertamina will evaluate the increase in oil and gas production so that later the full application of CCUS technology with CO2-EOR in Sukowati Field and continue in other oil and gas fields," added Fadjar.
In addition to East Java's Sukowati, continued Fadjar, Pertamina and partners are implementing CCS/CCUS technology in various oil and gas fields such as in Central Sumatra, South Sumatra, Asri Basin, Jatibarang, Gundih, East Kalimantan and Central Sulawesi.
