JAKARTA - Marketing Director of PT PAL Indonesia Willgo Zainar stated that cooperation between Indonesia and France in submarine development is a leap to build the independence of Indonesia's maritime industry in the region.

"This cooperation will bring great benefits, namely not only for the defense industry of the two countries but also for the development of human resource and technology capabilities in Indonesia," he said in Surabaya, East Java, quoted from Antara, Wednesday, October 9.

On March 28, 2024, PT PAL Indonesia together with the French Naval Group signed a contract for the construction of two Scorpène Evolved full Lithium Ion Battery (LiB) submarines.

The construction of a new submarine for the Scorpene type of Navy will be one hundred percent carried out domestically, namely by PT PAL Indonesia by absorbing local human resources (HR).

PT PAL Production Director Satriyo Bintoro added that PT PAL's involvement in the joint submarine construction project with France was part of proving its capacity as a major player in the global maritime industry arena.

"PT PAL Indonesia as a maritime industry in ASEAN has a positive track record in military and commercial ship development projects," he said.

Meanwhile, French Ambassador to Indonesia Fabien Penone said he was optimistic that PT PAL Indonesia had the ability to build high-tech submarines.

"We are very confident in PT PAL. This is why the two-submarine project will be fully built here because there is technology, there is knowledge, and enough expertise to do so," he said.

According to Penone, this strategic collaboration will strengthen Indonesia's ability to build complex-tech submarines while at the same time supporting PT PAL to develop submarine development capabilities independently.

"We are strengthening each other through this collaboration, and one important aspect is technology transfer," he said.
